Impact of Tourism on Kenya

Tourism in Kenya has been growing at a breakneck pace. It is the most successful model amongst all the other African countries. Given the potential, it’s a fair bet to say that this trend is going to continue far into the foreseeable future.

However, too much of a good thing can cause trouble. The impact of tourism on Kenya being one such example. Tourism has had an effect on the Kenyan biodiversity as well as on the local culture. For example, the disruptive human presence in Kenya has affected the number of wild animals living in parks. It has also had a disruptive influence on the their feeding habits. For example, birds and baboons are now found eating human garbage instead of their regular diets which in turn is disrupting the food chain.

The large number of tour buses have been having a deleterious impact on the soil of the roads and has increased the amount of air pollution. The flashes from cameras can scare away wild life and make them more shy and difficult to spot.

This impact of tourism on Kenya has led to the concept of Eco tourism which is being aggressively pursued by the government. One can only hope that the change can take place in time.
